ALK Source Materials

ALK Source Materials Laboratories, Inc. – Spring Mills, Pennsylvania
In the mid 1970's, blinded, placebo controlled clinical trials conducted at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland demonstrated that immunotherapy with Hymenoptera venom was 97% effective in preventing future allergic reactions in insect sting allergic patients. This landmark study provided the clinical basis for the large-scale production of Hymenoptera venoms for use as therapeutic and diagnostic reagents. As with any form of immunotherapy, there is a risk of local, systemic and serious systemic reactions. Read the product insert and follow all precautions.

ALK Source Materials Laboratories, Inc. was founded in 1977 by Dr. Allen Benton, and has been the world leader in the development and production of Hymenoptera venoms for the diagnosis and treatment of insect sting allergic disease. ALK Source Materials was sold to Pharmacia AB in 1982, and ultimately became an ALK-Abelló company when Pharmacia's immunotherapy business was acquired by the Chr. Hansen Group in 1986. Following Dr. Benton's retirement in early 1987, management continuity was maintained when the leadership was passed to Miles Guralnick who had joined ALK Source Materials at its inception as entomologist and general manager.

ALK Source Materials is a small company, located in a rural valley among the Allegheny Mountains of central Pennsylvania, where its highly trained and dedicated workforce is engaged in the manufacture of Hymenoptera venoms. The operation combines the disciplines of entomology, protein chemistry, and manufacturing to produce well controlled, high quality biological products. ALK Source Materials's reputation and dedication to quality begins with the field collection of large numbers of living wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets; extends throughout the venom extraction process; and continues through final packaging and delivery to its customers. Testing of the finished product includes appearance, measurements of protein content and enzyme activity, and identity testing by comparison to in-house standards.

ALK Source Materials's venom products are used primarily as starting materials or active pharmaceutical ingredients for the manufacture of allergenic extracts and in vitro diagnostics.
